New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis suffers from concussion – NFL News
Although New York Jets won their season opener in an impressive fashion, they are facing concern about losing their premier cornerback Darrelle Revis for the next few weeks.
Revis is diagnosed with concussion after getting injured in the Week 1 victory against Buffalo Bills.
Jets coach Rex Ryan announced the news on Monday, September 10, 2012. Revis was initially said to have a minor head injury, but after several tests and checkups on Monday, he was declared to have a mild concussion. Ryan said of the player:
"He seems to be feeling good, but whatever those (test) scores are, apparently that's low, I'll lean on the doctors and trainers. We'll see how he progresses during the week."
Revis injured his head when he was going after Bills running back C.J. Spiller. While trying to tackle Spiller, the cornerback went on the ground after which linebacker Bart Scott, who was also chasing Spiller, hit his head.
Revis initially got up and went towards the sideline, but was unable to participate in the rest of the game.
Jets will likely be facing the situation of playing without their All-Pro cornerback next Sunday, September16, 2012, in Week 2 game against Pittsburgh Steelers.
Revis will likely be out for a few weeks, as the National Football League (NFL) rules refrain a player from participating in any kind of on-field activity until he is cleared by the team’s medical staff and an independent neurologist.
The Jets cornerback has missed only two games in his entire professional career, both of them were in the 2010 season.
Jets are hoping to get their best defensive player back as soon as possible. Outlining the importance of Revis to the team, fellow linebacker Aaron Maybin said:
“You can't lose a player like Darrelle and say you're not going to suffer a dropoff in production. He's the best cornerback in the league. But as far as people stepping in to get the job done, we're very confident in their ability."
Revis was drafted by Jets in the first round (14th overall pick) of the 2007 draft. He is playing his sixth season for Jets. In the 2011 season, he completed 52 tackles and got four interceptions.
