New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis to miss Week 2 game against Pittsburgh Steelers – NFL News
New York Jets have announced that they will be without their starting cornerback Darrelle Revis in Week 2 game against Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, September 16, 2012.
Jets head coach Rex Ryan revealed the news while giving details of injured players on Friday, September 14, 2012.
It was surprising news for fans as Revis had returned to practice on Thursday after getting clearance from the medical staff for physical activities.
Ryan explained that according to the National Football League (NFL) protocol, Revis will not be allowed to play on Sunday. Players with concussion-related injuries must be cleared for full contact before participating in team practice and playing any game.
Ryan said:
“We’re just following NFL protocol, Darrelle’s been cleared for non-contact, but he hasn’t been cleared for contact.”
All Pro cornerback Revis suffered a mild concussion in the season opener against Buffalo Bills on Sunday, September 09.
Revis was struck in the head by fellow linebacker Bart Scott while following a player. He went to the sideline and was unable to return to the field.
In his absence, former first-round pick Kyle Wilson will be the starting cornerback for Jets. The head coach is expecting a good game from Wilson. Ryan said:
"We have a lot of confidence in Kyle Wilson, obviously, he has to step up in a starter role which he's ready for. I've seen a guy that really over the last two years, he's spent time with Darrelle in the offseason, training with him and learning football
from Darrelle, I think that tells you about Kyle's commitment. He wants to be a great football player, and why not learn from the best? And that's exactly what he does."
Jets will face a tough competition from Steelers wide receiving corps and in absence of Revis, Steelers will likely exert more pressure on Jets linebackers. Revis has been by far Jets’ best defensive player in his six years in the league. Last season he
got a massive 52 tackles.
