New York Jets elimination from playoffs moves coach closer to offense – Part 2
Continued from Part 1.....
The Jets offense has failed to improve all along the season that has led to a lot of criticism on offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer. Fans were furious with Schottenheimer and some even called for him to be sacked.
However, Ryan had then cooled down the things by coming to the support of his coach by saying that he had lost of confidence in all of his coaches.
The Jets offense led by Schottenheimer had averaged 307.7 yards per game being ranked at the 27th number in National Football League (NFL).
The heat on Schottenheimer had been generating all along but the intensity increased once the Jets lost to the Giants and later had their season ended when a much weaker side, the Miami Dolphins defeated them in the season’s finale.
That loss had all heat lose on Schottenheimer.
Schottenheimer did not stay for much longer in the team despite Ryan’s repeated announcements in which he had supported Schottenheimer.
All of a sudden after three season’s Schottenheimer wanted to leave in a hurry. He left for St Louis Rams and the likely reason for his leave was the criticism he faced.
Though Ryan remembered him as a good coach saying he had all the qualities to be a good coach, Ryan came out different a week later.
“He’s got everything it takes to be a successful head coach in this league”, Ryan said when Schottenheimer was leaving the team.
However, just a few days later, Ryan was pointing towards how complex the Jets offense system was under Schottenheimer. Ryan termed this complicated offensive system as one of the reasons why the Jets had failed to reach the playoffs.
Ryan also said that the complicated offensive system was the primary reason why he had stayed away from the offense all along the season but now he wanted to spend more time on the offense.
"Quite honestly, the verbiage we had last season was probably a little much", Ryan said.
The shift in Ryan’s tone points out to the change that Ryan’s thinking has undergone. From an outright support for a former coach, he has gone on to hit him which points out that Ryan would surely be planning on spending more time
with the team.
Ryan had already admitted that he had lost the “pulse” of the team and did not know much about the team’s problems other than just being present on the field. One Jets player, Darrelle Revis had recently pointed out that Ryan was
very much aware of what was going on in the team and the discord that existed.
Ryan had appeared determined to set things straight in the team and for this he was already planning on spending more time with the team.
And some of that time will surely be spent more on offense.
Ryan decided to bring in the former head coach of Miami Dolphins, Tony Sparano as the new offensive coordinator after Schottenheimer departed, intending to run a simpler offense.
Ryan seemed pretty excited at the prospectus of working with Sparano and seemed confident that he would successfully root out the team’s problems.
"When we were in interview process, he'd show me the verbiage and I'm like, wow, I can visualize our football team in this type of system, I can see Mark being extremely effective playing the quarterback position," Ryan added.
So for the next year Ryan plans to spend more time on offense and keep it as simple as possible.
