New York Jets end their losing run with a 27-13 swipe of St. Louis Rams – NFL Recap
New York Jets ended their three-game losing streak with an emphatic 27-13 victory over St. Louis Rams in Week 11 tie on Sunday, November 18, 2012, at Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis, MO.
With this win the Jets (4-6) are now tied at second place along with Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins in American Football Conference (AFC) East.
Meanwhile, Rams (3-6-1) are still at the bottom of National Football Conference (NFC) West.
Jets got a good reply from their players this time after hapless three weeks. They dominated the game on both sides of the field.
The game marked a staggering performance by under pressure quarterback Mark Sanchez who looked like a deserving starter after a long time.
Sanchez completed 15 out of 20 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown. He did not throw any interception in a game where Jets offence remained turnover-free.
Sanchez said after the game that this performance will help spread the winning attitude among all the players of the team. According to the Associated Press, Sanchez said:
"If you really take the positives from this game, build on those, continue to get better and improve, we can become a team that just doesn't turn the ball over. That could be our identity, if you want it to be and if you work at it."
Jets’ running game also remained very active throughout as running back Bilal Powell scored the first touchdown of his career. Powell carried the ball 11 times for 42 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns.
Rams offence failed to put up good performance as they remained under pressure by Jets strong defensive line and gave away three turnovers.
Quarterback Sam Bradford completed just 23 out of 44 passes for 170 yards and got two touchdowns. Talking to the media after the game, Rams running back Steven Jackson said:
"Turnovers and penalties, they just hurt us. It was kind of like stubbing your toe."
The game became a special occasion for Jets special teams as kicker Nick Folk became only the second player in the franchise history to score two 50-yard field goals in a game.
It was not a start that Jets wanted to have as Bradford threw a one-yard pass to wide receiver Brandon Gibson to take the lead.
However, the lead was cut short by Jets with a 51-yard field goal by Folk to finish the first quarter 3-7.
Jets finally got the lead in the second quarter with a 25-yard pass from Sanchez to wide receiver Chaz Schilens. It was followed by another field goal by Folk to end the first half with 13-7 score.
Third quarter saw a raging battle for both the offences against a walled defence. However, the score line was changed in the final quarter as Powell ran for five yards to reach the end zone and strengthened the Jets lead to 20-7.
Powell was active again as he scored another touchdown to put an insurmountable 27-7 lead. A late touchdown by Bradford was not enough to stop Jets from winning the game by 27-13.
