New York Jets eying Karl Dunbar as new defensive line coach – NFL News Update
According to the Daily News, the New York Jets intend to hire the former defensive line coach of the Minnesota Vikings, Karl Dunbar as their new defensive line coach.
Dunbar had served for the Vikings for six seasons but had been fired earlier this month.
The Jets had their eyes on him since then and also interviewed him two weeks back.
The Jets have undergone a few changes after their team failed to reach the playoffs this season.
Along with the elimination from the playoffs, the team has faced various controversies that included mounting criticism from fans and a messed up locker room situation along with the rift between quarterback, Mark Sanchez and Santonio
Holmes.
The Jets recently hired former coach of the Miami Dolphins, Tony Sparano as the new offensive coordinator after Brian Schottenheimer left the team.
Schottenheimer had been accumulating loads of criticism for his failure to improve the team’s offense and there were even angry calls to fire him. I
t seems that Schottenheimer left owing to the criticism, though the Jets’ head coach, Rex Ryan had been quite supportive of him throughout the season and his firing was out of question.
Sparano was brought in primarily to help Sanchez get back on track. Sanchez’s performance has been failing in recent weeks, which has become one of the major sources of concern for the team.
Changes had seemed imminent since the team was wiped off from the playoff contention after having ended up at 8-8 this season.
That had included a failure from Ryan to lead to his team to the Super Bowl event as he had kept claiming earlier on in the season.
Sanchez and Schottenheimer were the major recipients of criticism, following the loss.
The other changes in the team included the hiring of offensive line coach, Dave DeGuglielmo, and wide receivers' coach, Sanjay Lal.
However, if Dunbar is hired, that would lead to the status of the current defensive line coach, Mark Carrier, being uncertain.
Dunbar is a former National Football League (NFL) player who played as a defensive end for the Arizona Cardinals back in 1994.
Dunbar got acquainted with Ryan then, who at that time was the defensive assistant of Arizona Cardinals.
Under Dunbar, Vikings ended up being ranked in the top ten teams of the NFL with regard to total defence, from 2008 to 2010.
Vikings ranked as the top team in rush defence in NFL for three seasons from 2006 to 2008.
