New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum backs decision to acquire Tim Tebow – NFL News
After getting a huge bashing from the media in recent weeks, New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum has come out to defend the decision of selecting backup quarterback Tim Tebow this offseason.
Talking to ESPNNewYork.com on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, Tannenbaum clarified that signing Tebow was not the personal decision of Jets owner Woody Johnson.
Tannenbaum elucidated that the whole upper hierarchy of administration was involved in the decision-making process. He said:
"That's completely not true. It 100 percent came from this department. Do I talk to Woody all the time? Absolutely, but it was our call. Our view of the trade was, he's a weapon, there's no doubt about it. We brought him in as an additional weapon for our
offence ... That was the vision and the thought process for making the trade.”
Tannenbaum’s comments come at a time when Tebow is going through a barrage of negative comments made by his own teammates for not producing enough to fulfil the expectations.
The general manager refused to give his views about the recent article published in a newspaper that quoted some anonymous Jets player criticising Tebow for his lack of success in the wildcat package.
Tannenbaum made it clear that there is no criticism prevailing in the building about Tebow and that he desires to see the quarterback giving much better output.
There has been a massive onslaught on Tannenbaum in past few seasons for not strengthening the offence with players who can be valuable for the team. Tebow was the only big addition into the offence in the 2012 offseason.
Jets currently stand with a 3-6 record and looks to have lost their direction. Out of last 12 games, the team has lost nine.
With quarterback Mark Sanchez not playing well and wide receiver Santonio Holmes out for the season, Tannebaum admits that the team must pick up the pieces and play as a cohesive unit. Tannenbaum said:
"We're in a little bit of a rough patch here, there's no doubt about it, but we have a good core of players that we think we can win games with for a long time."
