New York Jets get huge division win against the New England Patriots
It was your classic match up of offence against defence and the edge went to the latter as the New York Jets defeated the New England Patriots 28-14 before a mostly packed New Meadowlands Stadium on Sunday
to improve their season record to 1-1.
New York stumbled out the gate last week and have some injuries to worry about early in this season, with the loss of defensive tackle Kris Jenkins, out for the season with a knee injury sustained in week
one against the Baltimore Ravens. But his absence wasn’t sorely missed in the running game as the Patriots rushed for a combined 52 yards and the Jets handed their division rivals their first loss of the year.
After all, New York had the best defence in the NFL last season and their aggressive nature showed up against the Patriots and limited them to only 14 points.
It was the Jets’ offence that was on point and not New England’s as New York’s quarterback Mark Sanchez completed a career-high 21 passes on 30 attempts for 220 yards for three touchdowns. He connected
with Braylon Edwards, Jerricho Cotchery and Dustin Keller for TDs which put the game out of reach for the Patriots.
"We did a lot of talking," running-back LaDainian Tomlinson said of his team. "But at some point, you've got to prove it. That's what it was about today."
Tomlinson had a nice 31-yard run, showing that he still has speed in the open field and led all rushers in the game with 76 yards on 11 carries.
Tom Brady posted decent numbers completing 20 of 36 passes for 248 yards and two touchdowns, but his big time receivers were held in check by the Jets’ talented secondary. Brady’s number deep threat Randy
Moss was contained the entire game and caught only two passes for 38 yards and a touchdown.
“Some things you just can't answer," Moss said. "It just seemed like we fell apart in the second half." Although he was quite for much of the game, he did manage to haul in a spectacular one-handed grab
over New York's Pro Bowl cornerback, Darrelle Revis, who left the game after that play with a left hamstring injury and did not return.
"It felt good pre-game and during the game," Revis said. "I was running around with Randy [Moss] the whole time. It wasn't until he scored, that's when I pulled up a little bit."
Revis will have an MRI exam Monday and is unsure how long he might be out.
