New York Jets get overtime victory against Miami Dolphins in Week 3 game – NFL Recap
New York Jets defeated Miami Dolphins, 23-20, in a competitive game that was forced to overtime on Sunday, September 23, 2012, at Sun Life Stadium, Miami, Florida.
Kicker Nick Folk got the winning points in overtime for Jets with a 33-yard field goal.
Just before this field goal attempt, Folk’s kick was blocked, but the referee negated it as Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin had called a timeout seconds before the kick.
Philbin had a grin on his face as Folk scored on the second attempt. During the postgame talk, Philbin said:
"I thought it was the right call. I was planning all along to call timeout right before he kicked the ball. ... Typically we're going to ice the kicker."
Dolphins also had many chances to take the game away. In the possession before Folk’s kick, Dolphins got the opportunity to go ahead with a field goal attempt, but Dan Carpenter’s kick was blocked by Jets.
Jets were lucky at times as they were trailing behind Dolphins up until the final quarter before getting the lead 20-17. Jets head coach Rex Ryan thought it was a hard-fought but well deserved victory. Ryan said:
"We got breaks, no doubt about it. We'll take the win. We're not going to give it back. We expected to win, but my goodness, it was tough."
Quarterback Mark Sanchez did not give a very impressive performance. He ended up with 21 of 45 for 306 yards. He missed several scoring opportunities with wild throws.
It was a similar story for his counterpart Ryan Tannehill, as he gave a mixed bag of performance. Tannehill completed 16 out of 36 passes for 196 yards.
Dolphins looked dominant at the start of the game. Running back Daniel Thomas ran one-yard for a touchdown as the first quarter ended 0-7.
Jets defence was again pressed really hard during the second quarter by Dolphins offence. They got a chance to strengthen their lead and they did exactly that with a 21-yard field goal by Carpenter.
The Gang Green finally opened their account with less than two minutes remaining in the quarter. Folk scored a 33-yard field goal to make the score 3-10.
The score got levelled when Jets intercepted Tannehill’s pass and scored on the return. Dolphins regained their lead with a one-yard run by running back Jorvorskie Lane. As the third quarter finished, the score was 10-17.
Jets started final quarter with a 20-yard field goal and then moved further as Sanchez threw a seven-yard pass to wide receiver Jeremy Kerley for a touchdown to take the lead 20-17.
With 16 seconds left in the quarter, Dolphins forced the game to overtime a superb 41-yard field goal, but could not provide scoring move in overtime.
