New York Jets guard Matt Slauson amazed by response to his block on linebacker Brian Cushing – NFL News
New York Jets guard Matt Slauson has expressed amazement about the reaction that has come out for his particular block to Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing which resulted in a season-ending injury for the latter.
The incident took place during Jets’ Week 5 game against Texans on Sunday, October 07, 2012, which they lost by 17-23. Cushing’s injury has triggered a stream of criticism on whether the block was legal or not.
Slauson exclaimed on Wednesday, October 10, that there was no foul behind the block as he had no intentions to injure the linebacker. According to the Associated Press (AP), Slauson said:
"I wasn't trying to hurt him, obviously. I must have just caught him by surprise, but unfortunately, things like that happen. I feel like it was a clean block, I've been told by my coaches it was a clean block, so I would be surprised (if I'm fined). I hope
I don't. But, if I do, I'll just deal with it."
Texans head coach Gary Kubiak declared the severity of Cushing’s injury on Tuesday, October 09.
He told the media that the All-Pro had a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and will not be able to play again this season. Cushing will need to go through surgical procedure to repair his injured knee.
This incident has sparked a debate among fans as well as players that whether the National Football League (NFL) rules are too lenient in case of safety of the defensive players.
Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Mathews has been in the forefront criticising the NFL, which according to him has double standards.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello has informed AP that the league will go through an investigation regarding the injury and block.
On the other hand, Kubiak did not make huge fuss about the block. Instead, he told media that Texans must deal with the reality of playing without their top player. Kubiak said:
"That's in the league's hands. It doesn't change the fact that we're sitting here today having to deal with losing a heck of a player."
