New York Jets have no intentions of shutting up
Love them or hate them, the Jets are a team that loves to talk.
Maybe loves it a bit too much and have a knack for getting under the skins of their opponents. That is just how they roll. They take shots at their rivals openly and discretely. They would even hurl abuses at them (Antonio Cromartie anyone?) and not get
chastised for it.
New England Patriots’, Wes Welker, poked fun at Rex Ryan and his foot fetish. For that, Patriots coach, Bill Belichick, didn’t let him start in New England’s playoff game against the Jets.
Cromartie called New England’s quarterback Tom Brady something that I can’t write here and he didn’t even get a public rebuke from New York’s coach, Rex Ryan. Instead Ryan defended him and said that Cromartie had the right to have and express any opinion
he feels like having.
That is Jets culture. That is the difference between Belichick and Ryan. The Jets don’t believe in keeping quiet if they have nothing good to say and won’t apologize for it.
“We've got guys who are confident”, New York’s defensive back, Dwight Lowery, said Monday, “and we all show that confidence in different ways”.
The Jets look up to Rex Ryan the same way the Patriots look up to Bill Belichick. Whereas Belichick is the poster child for restraint and calm demeanour, Ryan comes off as an eccentric and exuberant speaker, who loves to ruffle feathers and speak his mind,
despite what others might think of him.
The Jets are a reflection of Ryan, attenuated on some occasions and amplified on others.
“Everybody's true to their colours here”, defensive lineman Sione Pouha said. “This is Rex's style, and, as everyone can see, we love it”.
Joe Namath certainly can see it and he is definitely loving it. “THATS WHAT WE'RE TALKIN ABOUT!!!”, an excited Namath tweeted during this Sunday’s game.
The Jets were in New England’s face (Brady’s in particular, he was sacked 5 times in that game) with their celebrations after every point scored. Even Rex Ryan couldn’t hold himself back, and ran to the end zone, to celebrate a touchdown with the team.
“We came out here to battle today. Nobody gave us a chance. So, for all the media and everybody else that was on the Patriots’ jock, take that”, Braylon Edwards said. Not that his back flips on the field hadn’t already made the ‘take that’ message abundantly
clear.
Shonn Greene made the football his pillow when he rushed 16 yards for a touchdown. There was a lot of screaming, a bit of dancing and whole lot of posturing. The celebrations didn’t rest well with the home crowd but the Jets couldn’t have cared less.
Patriots wide receiver, Deion Branch, was unimpressed by the Jets antics on the field. “The embarrassing part came from a few classless guys (on the Jets) after the game”, he said. “There were a lot of classless things that went on after the game ended”.
Branch said that the Jets were taunting New England’s fans and some even gave the crowd the finger. “Pretty classless stuff”, Branch re-emphasized.
The Jets think that Branch is just being a sore loser. “Just take the loss like a man,” Jets cornerback, Darrelle Revis, said, “Just take it like a man, and move on”.
The New York Jets have been talking big and winning big. They did what they said they would do to the Indianapolis Colts. That was a well played game and the Jets deserve credit for it.
However, when Ryan and the Jets were picking on the Patriots, the popular opinion was that it was all just talk. They were able to back it up with a spectacular victory and are now headed to the AFC Championship game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Expect to see the Jets talk big again. “I just talk the way it is,” Ryan said. “If you can't get motivated to win an AFC Championship Game, I don't know what else you need”.
