New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan: Starting position of quarterback Mark Sanchez is intact – NFL News
Even though the long run of poor performance by quarterback Mark Sanchez continues to go on and now looks unending, New York Jets and their brave head coach Rex Ryan have maintained that the player is the best choice for the starting quarterback position.
Ryan answered questions of reporters via conference call on Tuesday, October 09, 2012. Giving his views about Sanchez’s recent performance, Ryan said:
“Well, I think when you look at it, last night I thought he played pretty good. I thought he was accurate with the football. We had three drops, obviously. One of them, I think it was a drop that led to an interception. But other than that, I thought he
was accurate with the football.”
Jets (2-3) lost another game on Monday night, October 08, this one against a better opponent, Houston Texans, by 17-23. Sanchez finished the game completing 14 out of 31 passes for 230 yards.
When Ryan was asked about whether Sanchez will remain a starter in Week 6 against Indianapolis Colts, he said:
"Yeah, no question."
Despite the confidence shown on Sanchez by the Jets head coach, one may wonder how much Sanchez’s lacklustre play would affect the job security of Ryan.
Jets’ fans are eager to see backup quarterback Tim Tebow getting the starting position. However, Tebow has not impressed many with his performance during his limited time on the field.
The wildcat package has been the flop of the season and with many injuries the offensive line is dealing with, this makes even difficult for Sanchez to get the passes right. Talking about Sanchez, Ryan carried on and said:
“I think his night was going to look a lot better had those things not happened. Now, we have to be smart, we have to really look at it.”
Sanchez has struggled connecting with his wide receivers. The main reason behind it was that he is playing with backup receivers who did not have much time to practise with the quarterback.
Ryan looks to be in a very uncomfortable position. His starting quarterback is playing like a backup, while his backup is not capable enough to through long passes.
