New York Jets’ head coach Rex Ryan determined to set things straight in the team – NFL News Update
New York Jets’ head coach, Rex Ryan, in his recent conference call on Friday, January 13, 2012, has said that he would set things right in the team while admitting that he did come short on some issues.
It has been a hectic season all along for the Jets and one that brought in loads of embarrassment for the coach who has taken big strides in making claims and hitting out on his opponents.
Starting from New York Giants, Ryan had boasted of Jets' abilities of being the better side for ten years and owning this town.
Those claims received a severe rebuke as the Giants came out to clean the New York Jets, 24-19, on the field in week 16.
Ryan did not stop the humiliation after that.
He went on to say that they would win the Super Bowl but ended up losing to the Miami Dolphins, 19-17, in week 17 in the regular season.
That saw the Jets eliminated from the playoff race and Ryan had to eat his words.
Apart from failing to have proved himself right, the coach faced other issues too.
One was criticism on quarterback, Mark Sanchez, that kept intensifying with some anonymous players questioning his position and one player going to the extent of calling him “lazy”. Ryan kept his support for Sanchez firm, reiterating his confidence in the
player.
Offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer left the team in a hurry and Ryan brought in Tony Sparano as a replacement.
However, these were not the only problems that were facing the coach. There were other issues too but Ryan seemed determined to get through them.
Ryan, in his conference, said he would set things straight in the team.
He turned his attention towards the locker team, pointing out that some of the problems of the club were due to the fact that the players were not close enough, together as a group, as they had been in the past.
Ryan regretted not keeping a close eye on the team outside the field that surely resulted in the tense environment in the locker room.
Tensions have remained high in the Jets’ locker room this season with wide receiver, Santonio Holmes, being benched for arguing with team mates in the season’s final game.
The standoff between Sanchez and Holmes came out in the open that led Ryan to state that he had not been able to handle the situation well.
Backup quarterback, Greg McElroy took to a radio station to claim there were “selfish” people in the locker room and that the room had a “corrupt mindset”.
“I need to be in the locker room. I need to be around more, be involved more in the day-to-day, like right there in the meeting rooms and everything else, and that's what I plan on doing',' Ryan said.
Ryan admitted his responsibility for misjudging the team this year and said that would not happen next year.
"I got away from that, thinking a head coach is supposed to act a little differently, and it hurt me. I misjudged it, and I've taken full responsibility, and it will not happen in 2012", Ryan said.
It seems that the losses this season have not slowed down Ryan who seems intent on making way with his huge ambitions.
