New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan disappointed with Jeremy Kerley this offseason – NFL News
It is not usual for New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan to point finger towards any player publicly.
Yet on Saturday, July 28, 2012, he particularly focused on one player, Jeremy Kerley, who will start his second season in the league, and the hopes were that he will be able to improve his output after a disappointing rookie season.
However, things have not looked bright this offseason, according to Ryan. He said:
"Jeremy (Kerley) needs to step it up, because quite honestly, I was a little disappointed in Jeremy this offseason. He's got to pick up this system, this new system. You have to put time in it."
Jets have not added a veteran wide receiver this offseason, putting their trust on Kerley. Yet he has failed to impress his coach.
Moreover, Kerley is now out for a week with hamstring injury. This will make his case even more porous.
Kerley has been reported to have struggled to learn the offensive system put up by the new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano.
Rex Ryan, who has the reputation of being a player-friendly coach, has recently been very vocal against his players.
He recently dismissed comments made by Santonio Holmes about the team’s two quarterback system. He said that Holmes is brought to be the wide receiver not offensive coordinator.
Ryan did say that Kerley had the capability to achieve great feats, if he wanted to. Ryan said:
"Jeremy's one of the hardest working guys I've seen. Last year, Mike Tannenbaum challenged him to catch 250 balls a day, and he does. Then he'll go and catch 100 punts."
Kerley got 29 passes and covered 314 yards last season. He also played as a punt returner, getting 29 passes while covering 317 yards.
Ryan acknowledged the fact that that key players like Mark Sanchez and Santonio Holmes need to improve in order to make things happen this season. He even included himself in the improvement list. He said:
"We had a poor year, there's no doubt, from Tone, myself, Mark, all of us. You know we want to have a better year this year and we're determined to do so."
