New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan insists he will call the play on Tim Tebow’s playing time – NFL News
The last time New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan was asked question about backup quarterback Tim Tebow, he replied in an ireful manner. However, the reply was not that fierce on Wednesday, September 19, 2012.
During a post practice news conference, Ryan responded to the question about Tebow’s playing time on the field and made it crystal clear that he does not have any intentions of revealing his plans. Ryan said:
"I think going in, like I say, there could be more opportunities down the road. There could be less, but that's it. I'm happy he's here. I can tell you that much. I think, as we've said from Day 1, this guy's a good football player. We're not going in saying
he has to get X-amount of snaps. That's not what we do."
Throughout the two games this season, Tebow has managed to run just six times for only 33 yards.
Tebow also participated in only 12 plays out of 114 overall plays of Jets offence. Even though he was put on the field in the latter part of the third quarter during Week 2 game against Pittsburgh Steelers, Tebow had a very good game.
As Tebow was looking strong in the game, he was pulled back to the sideline. Ryan carried on and said with a smiley face that he will not let the media dictate Tebow’s playing time.
Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano has previously stressed that Tebow’s wildcat package gives starting quarterback Mark Sanchez an added benefit of having extra time out. Ryan went on and said:
"When you look at this past game, we only had those three Wildcat plays, but, really, the Wildcat is a personnel grouping, and sometimes you want to go with that personnel grouping and sometimes you don't."
Although Ryan is aiming to keep Tebow a surprise, it will be effective only if he spends more time on the field.
Moreover, the offensive output does not depend only on the play of a backup quarterback, the rest of the offensive team need to raise their game against Miami Dolphins after a miserable run against Steelers.
