New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan mum on Tim Tebow’s refusal to play wildcat – NFL News
The relationship between New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan and unhappy backup quarterback Tim Tebow has reached new low as the coach refused to deny on Monday, December 24, 2012, whether the two had a heated discussion last week.
The coach attended the press conference via conference call, a day after Jets got a 17-27 defeat against San Diego Chargers on Sunday, December 23.
Ryan did admit that Tebow was not happy with the team’s decision to replace quarterback Mark Sanchez with third-tier quarterback Greg McElroy rather than giving the chance to Tebow. Recalling the events happened this week, Ryan said:
"He was disappointed, there's no question he was disappointed he was not named the starter, I'm not going to get into private conversations that I have with players. It was my decision to use Jeremy Kerley in the Wildcat, without question.
I'll say this: I believe if Tim's number was called, he would've gone in and played. I don't think there's any doubt about that."
According to the reports circulating in the media, Tebow had a heated argument with Ryan last Tuesday that led to both not talking to each other for the next few days.
However, the matter cooled down a bit on Friday, December 21, and Tebow was ready to play in the wildcat.
Meanwhile, Ryan had already made the decision to play the alternative in the wildcat formation and used wide receiver Jeremy Kerley during the game.
Ryan did not give any specifics as to what has really happened between him and Tebow behind the scenes. Ryan carried on and said:
"I've been transparent without question, but I'm not going to give you a private conversation that I would have with a player, that's between him and I.”
Tebow, who was expected to be one of the forefront players of the offence, has only played a mere 72 snaps this season. The player has not been given better playing time despite being active in most of the games.
Even though Ryan is trying to cover the controversy, one can easily read between the lines that ties between Tebow and the Gang Green now look to have reached an end.
