New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan still backing quarterback Mark Sanchez as starter – NFL News
New York Jets were dismantled by San Francisco 49ers in a miserable 34-0 in Week 4 game on Sunday, September 30, 2012 and quarterback Mark Sanchez was on top of the list of guys who looked struggling in the game.
However, Jets head coach Rex Ryan still believes that Sanchez is the guy who can lead the side to good times. Ryan said:
"I'm not ready to make a quarterback change. Obviously we've got to get better play at quarterback, and we got to get better play at a lot of things. You look at yourself first, and there's things we clearly all need to do. I don't think that's the answer.
Mark's the answer at quarterback. . . . We have to get better play at quarterback.”
Although it was expected that Jets defence would suffer in absence of cornerback Darrelle Revis, it was other way round as Sanchez gave one of the worst performance of his career.
Sanchez ended up with 13 of 29 passes for a mere 103 yards without any touchdown. Even during the game, crowd in New York was booing Sanchez and company and there was speculation that quarterback Tim Tebow will come out in the second half.
The reason behind not playing Tebow as the starter might be convincing, as too little playing time to their dynamic backup quarterback is not going to help the offence.
The injury to their star wide receiver Santonio Holmes could let to even more misery to Sanchez and company.
Ryan’s decision to keep Sanchez the starting quarterback is based on the fact that Tebow does not have a very good passing ability.
If Sanchez continues to perform like he did on Sunday, Ryan would have to take his hands off him and try the dynamic Tebow.
Jets are in a critical situation with fans shouting for change, but Ryan is confident that his job is as safe as ever. When asked about his job security, Ryan said:
“No, not at all. [I] just have to improve."
