New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan still furious about his team’s portrayal as circus – NFL News
Victories do not come without mental toughness. This is exactly true for New York Jets as their head coach Ryan made sure that his players do not underestimate themselves after getting immense criticism from media in the offseason.
Ryan’s team gave a strong reply to the criticism as they beat Buffalo Bills 48-28 in Week 1 game on Sunday, September 09, 2012.
Giving his stance about the recent downpour of criticism towards Jets in a news conference on Monday, September 10, Ryan said:
“It seems like that's how people look at us, I was like, 'You can think that all you want, but we see something totally different.' I do -- and I know this football team does. Our opponents will take us seriously, I promise you that."
The coach got particularly furious when New York Post portrayed Ryan as a clown alongside Jets quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow.
Ryan totally rejected the circus characterization a few days after the picture was published. He then put up the matter in the team meeting the next day.
He told his players not to focus on what other people say about them. Instead, he insisted that they only had to prove to themselves that they could achieve great feat. Talking about that meeting, linebacker Aaron Maybin said:
"It made it a bigger deal for us to go out there and prove to each other that we had each other's back. The big thing Rex was hammering last week was, he didn't want us in the mode of proving outsiders wrong. He said it has to be about the people in this
locker room."
Jets looked flawless on Sunday as they broke the franchise record for scoring most points in a season opener.
Yet the interesting thing to notice was that after the victory most of their players did not blast media, instead it was all cool and calm, indicating that Jets have become a much more organised unit this season. It is a big achievement for Ryan, whose major
problem last season was his team’s lack of discipline.
