New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan to use Tim Tebow’s wildcat package whenever he wants – NFL News
After answering huge sums of questions about backup quarterback Tim Tebow’s wildcat package in the last few months, New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan was infuriated during a recent media talk when he was asked about why they did not use it more often.
Talking in a strict tone, Ryan said:
"We always said from day one, we can do it 20 times, 40 times, 10 times, two times, whatever. We determine that, OK?"
Ryan’s anger does not seem quite valid because Tebow looked good during the Jets 27-10 loss to Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, September 16, 2012.
Although he was put on the field later in the third quarter, Tebow struck early as he went for a 22-yard run.
However, Tebow was pulled back to the sidelines after only three plays in a second-and-16 situation in order to get starting quarterback Mark Sanchez back.
This decision did not provide a good outcome as Sanchez got two incompletions in a row. It showed lack of trust in Tebow in such situations.
Ryan denied that Tebow’s weak passing game towards the end zone was the reason behind this decision. Ryan said:
"Right now, we think Mark gives us the best chance to be successful in that particular situation against that particular opponent. Those are things we'll always look at, but I believe Tim can pass. We'll make the decision on when a guy's out there and when
he's not out there."
Jets offensive coordinator has already emphasised that playing Tebow as a wildcat gives Sanchez an extra time out to review his strategy during the game.
Meanwhile, Tebow himself said that he is not frustrated with the lack of playing time during the first two games of the season. During these games, Tebow only had 12 plays in the offensive team. Tebow said:
“I just go in when they tell me and try to do the best I can. It all depends on how the game is going."
