New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan worried about effectiveness of wildcat package – NFL News
It seems that nothing is going according to plan for New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan. The Jets got a 0-34 beating against San Francisco 49ers in Week 4 game on Sunday, while their wildcat package has not yet able to give good results.
Jets’ wildcat was supposed to be the igniting factor in their offence. With quarter of the season played, it has not yet been able to fulfil its raison d’etre.
Backup quarterback Tim Tebow has just carried the ball nine times for three yards in wildcat package. His nine-yard completion was his first of the season. The entire Jets team failed to cover more yards than 49ers’ Colin Kaepernick who covered 50 yards
on Sunday.
This puts Ryan under even greater pressure to come up with solution to the havoc created in the offensive side.
Talking to media in his postgame press conference, Ryan admitted that the wildcat has not triggered to lead the offence. Ryan said:
“We haven’t been as successful at running the Wildcat as I thought we would. I think that’s fair to say, but again, without question, I’m not ready to give up on him. I think the Wildcat is tough to defend and I’ve always said that. It certainly looked like
it yesterday with them running their version of the Wildcat.”
Ryan has taken the stance of not shutting down the wildcat. The decision looks to be based on some harsh facts. There seems to be no other way right now to take drastic turn in the offensive system.
After an outstanding season opener, starting quarterback Mark Sanchez has shown even worse performance as compared to the last season, making the offensive like incapable of being part of team that stands 2-2 in the season.
The lack of ability to throw long passes limits Tebow’s playing time at quarterback. Therefore playing him as starter would not increase the offensive output to a great extent.
Ryan and company would have to come up with good performance in the next few games; otherwise it could lead to a few members of the Gang Green being shown the door.
