New York Jets injury-list could grow, as Drew Coleman undergoes MRI scan
New York Jets Cornerback Drew Coleman underwent an MRI scan on his knee on Thursday, according to a source.
Coleman injured his knee in Thursday’s practice on the last play. He had to be helped off of the field, but made it clear that he would do his best to not miss playing against the New England Patriots in Sunday’s American Football
Conference (AFC) divisional playoff game. However, the team is concerned about his injury, enough for them to require Coleman to be subjected to an MRI.
During a news conference after practice on Thursday, Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan said that he did not know how severe Coleman’s injury was at the moment. Players who attended practice said that it looked as though Coleman was in
pain.
Coleman is a major factor in their game plan for Sunday, seeing as he covers the slot receiver. If he does not get well in time for Sunday’s game, Kyle Wilson would be his substitute. Although he is struggling as a rookie, the
Jets really have no other choice.
"If he can't go, sure it would be a blow," defensive coordinator Mike Pettine said. "But again, that's something we'll have to figure it out with the depth of our back line. Obviously [we could fill in] with Kyle, Dwight Lowery, Marquice
Cole and possibly by making Isaiah Trufant active."
The Jets have already lost safety Jim Leonhard in a freak accident during a practice session before their last game against the Pats. They lost that game 45-3 without Leonhard, allowing Pats quarterback Tom Brady to score four
unanswered touchdowns. When asked about the chances of a pre-Pats jinx, Lowery laughed. He said, "Maybe they flew over our facility and put a magic spell on us."
Brad Smith, kick returner and wide receiver, was limited in practice and is uncertain for Sunday’s game after sustaining a groin injury. Smith told reporters, "I'm feeling better. I was able to get some reps, do some more individuals,
things like that."
He also said that he is running more now that he did earlier in the week. Smith said, "I'm encouraged by what's going on. Ultimately it's going to be up to the coaches and what they feel would be best for the team and myself."
Special-teams coach Mike Westhoff highlighted the player’s importance to the team by saying, "We're prepared to go without him, but we'd love to go with him,"
Right guard Brandon Moore had a back injury but is expected to play on Sunday. Safety James Ihedigo sustained a knee and ankle injury, while cornerback Darrelle Revis had a hamstring injury, but both are expected to be ready
for round three against the Pats.
Their game against New England will take place on Sunday, 16 January at Gillette Stadium.
