New York Jets institute push-ups for penalties policy
The New York Jets, who have committed an alarming 63 penalties this season, have found a new way to motivate themselves to improve and handle an issue that has been a problem for the team since the start of the season.
The Jets have instituted a policy where everyone in the organization will do push-ups for every foul committed during a game – everyone, that is, except for the individual who committed the infraction.
The policy applies to everyone within the organization, from players to coaches, to the staff, all the way to the owner.
"You name it, we're doing it," Jets head coach Rex Ryan reported to the media. "The whole organization is committed to finding a way to get better at this."
It was Jets' executive vice president for business operations, Mike Higgins, who got the ball rolling on the idea when he sent out an organization wide email on Thursday 11 November.
Speaking with The Associated Press, Higgins said, "We were talking this morning, saying it sure would be nice if everyone, in an act of solidarity, in the entire organization did push-ups, too. So we kicked around the idea of it and mentioned it
to some of the staff, but then it spread like wildfire, which really is a reflection of the extent to which Rex really makes you want to run through a wall.
"This is a commitment. We're all committed to standing behind the team to get the penalties under control. This will continue throughout the season."
The news of the Jets new policy has spread quickly and even fans have offered to join in. "Our fans do a lot, so certainly we wouldn't require it from them," Higgins added jokingly, "but by all means, the social pressure of our fans also doing the push-ups
can only help the cause."
