New York Jets might utilise Tim Tebow as kickoff returner – NFL News
It seems that Tim Tebow will not be just a backup for quarterback Mark Sanchez. After putting him to work as a punt protector during the minicamp, Jets have discovered a potential kickoff returner in Tebow.
Talking to the New York Daily News, Jets’ assistant special team coach Ben Kotwica said that they are considering the option of playing Tebow in the kickoff team. He said:
"I think there might be some value there on kickoff returns. It's something that we've talked about. I don't think there's any option with Tim that we've taken off the table. So, that would be something that would be new to him as well. In what we've asked him to do as the personal (punt) protector (right now), he's done an excellent job."
There is no doubt that Tebow is a dynamic player and Jets should utilise his potential as much as possible.
Yet, Jets must be careful in choosing Tebow’s position. Playing in kick return usually means frequent concussions and hard hits.
Tebow had an outstanding last season as starter for Denver Broncos. He scored 12 touchdowns, out of which six were rushing touchdowns. He also sent six interceptions and covered 1,729 yards.
Tebow got all the limelight last season, not only for his on-field performance but also due to his lifestyle.
Jets were criticised by many for adding a player like Tebow, who is not out-an-out starter to replace the dismal Sanchez.
On the contrary, Tebowmania was in full swing when he arrived in the Big Apple. Billboards were placed all over the city to welcome him.
Tebow has already said that he is ready to play at any position the team wants. He said:
“Whatever I’m asked to do, I’m going to do it. I’ll do whatever I can to help this team win football games.”
Tebow might have the talent to play as a kickoff returner, but Jets must have to consider where he gives the most output.
Also, Jets might not need Tebow as kickoff returner if they have other players on the roster for that job.
