New York Jets nose tackle Kris Jenkins planning improbable comeback
Despite facing a prognosis that he would miss the rest of the reason, and soem calls to retire, Kris Jenkins announced a Thursday he was going to try come back earlier than anyone thought.
The starting defensive tackle for the New York Jets left the game early in week one when the Jets lost 10-9 to the Baltimore Ravens in a Monday encounter. When the news came back that he had torn is alterior
cruciate ligament for the second time in back-to-back seasons, it was reported that he would be out for the season prompting many to speculate that it was time for Jenkins to call it a career. But Jenkins revealed on Thursday that he has no such intentions
and expects to be back.
Jenkins made the news public on his facebook page when he wrote:
"Yes it is true. I have decided to give it one more shot."
The prospects of Jenkins making a real comeback seem improbable, given what the 31-year-old has been through in recent seasons, but the four-time Pro Bowler seems determined.
"A couple of things," Jenkins wrote. "One, Yes I will wear knee braces; 2, I don't care who disagrees; 3, I am crazy enough to pull it off!!!!!"
Jenkins has also told reporters that the recently repaired knee was not damaged as bad as initially believed, and that he feels better now than he did at the same point in his recovery last season.
"I'm in uncharted waters," Jenkins told the
New York Times. "But I'm at the point where I don't care what anybody thinks."
Despite being without one of their star defensive players the Jets have been doing quite well, and backup nose tackle Sione Pouha has been effective in Jenkins' absence.
Since coming to the Jets in 2008, Jenkins has only managed to make it through one full season. He was injured in week six last season in a game against the Buffalo Bills and missed the rest of the season.
