New York Jets offensive coach Brian Schottenheimer on Jacksonville Jaguars head coach targets list
Another day, another official on the radar of the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are in search for a head coach for their side, and this time it is reported to be New York Jets' offensive co-ordinator, Brian Schottenheimer.
According to latest reports, various sources have pointed out at the team's approach to Jets management, seeking permission for interviewing their offensive coaching staff as a prospective candidate for their vacant head coaching position.
The Jaguars have been without a head coach for more than two months since Del Rio had been fired by their former owner, Wayne Weaver.
Weaver had reportedly given Rio a task of taking his side to postseason in the 2011 National Football League (NFL) season, and fired him just before the end of the regular season for not having lived up to expectations.
Rio was fired on November 29, 2011, the day Wayne Weaver also announced selling of the Jaguars to Illinois-based and Pakistan-born American businessman, Shahid Khan, in a $770 million deal.
This week was the first week of Mr Khan as the Jacksonville owner since taking over the position officially on January 04, 2012, with the first challenge of finding a head coach for his club awaiting him.
He apparently seems well up to the challenge and has been seen to be involved straightaway with his management in their hunt for a coach.
The side is reported to have already lined up a number of officials of different teams for an interview; with full focus various officials from the offensive departments.
Some of the teams that have been approached by Mr. Khan and his management staff, seeking to interview their officials included the Cincinnati Bengals, New York Giants and Carolina Panthers.
However, the latest reports have disclosed that the side has also placed the New York Jets Schottenheimer, in search for a suitable candidate to be their head coach.
These reports were also confirmed by the Jets in their postseason media conference with hopes that he is unlikely to leave them for any other side.
Jets general manager, Mike Tannenbaum, said that he was optimistic that Brian Schottenheimer would be back with the New York Jets for his seventh straight season.
However, Rex Ryan, another Jets’ official, said that there was 50-50 chance of Schottenheimer going to the Jaguars if he was to be selected by the side.
There is no confirmation of these reports by the Jaguars except for that the side continues its search for a head coach with the next regular season in mind.
The Jags have played their post-Rio games in the league with their interim coach, Mel Tucker, in charge. Tucker has been promoted from his defensive coaching duties to take over as a head coach for the moment.
Hiring of a fulltime head coach by the Jaguars will solve Mr. Khan’s first and major challenge since moving to the Jacksonville franchise, along with give them a fresh breathe of air in their move to becoming a top level club in the league.
