New York Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano defends wildcat package – NFL News
After the failure to utilise Tim Tebow effectively this season, New York Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano has come out to defend the wildcat scheme that has been unable to become very fruitful for the offence.
Sparano talked to the media recently, and got a storm of questions from the reporters regarding the way Tebow has been used in the 2012 season. Giving the explanation to implement the wildcat package, Sparano said:
"The way that I think the perception is of the Wildcat is that we had a bunch of these 30-yard gains. That wasn't the case in Miami, either. In Miami, it wasn't the case at all. We just did it a lot more, so the 2-yard gains and the 5-yard gains (didn't
stand out), but then the 15-yard gain, I guess that jumped out more than the 2 or the 5."
Ever since Sparano has joined the Gang Green in the offseason this year, the team’s offence output has gone downwards. The team is currently ranked 30th in the league for the total yards covered.
Moreover, the team’s franchise quarterback Mark Sanchez’s performance has gone from bad to worse under Sparano.
Tebow is also furious about the way Jets have benched him for the rest of the season. After quarterback Greg McElroy has been made the starting quarterback, it looks as if Tebow was only acquired for the wildcat package.
Jets head coach Rex Ryan has been disappointed with lack of success with the wildcat package.
When Ryan was asked whether Sparano would remain a part of the team for next season, Ryan replied:
"I think with any situation, whether it's staff or whatever, you know the policy of this organization is not to discuss those things until the appropriate time."
Ryan also made some compelling statement when asked to compare Sparano with the Jets offensive coordinator for last season Brian Schottenheimer.
Ryan went on to tell all the positives of the former offensive coordinator while remained silent about the current one.
Sparano looks to be in great danger of losing his job as Ryan seems to have made up his mind to put all the blames of the team’s offensive woes on the offensive coordinator.
