New York Jets offensive linebacker Calvin Pace rates Patriots offence as nearly illegal – NFL News
A few days before facing their American Football Conference (AFC) East rivals in Week 7, New York Jets offensive linebacker Calvin pace has called the New England Patriots’ no-huddle offence as borderline illegal on Wednesday, October 17, 2012.
Giving his opinion on the way the Patriots offensive scheme works, Calvin said that it is hard to work out a counter strategy against it. He said:
"It's borderline illegal because sometimes the guys aren't always set when they snap the ball, but it's smart. Why not hurry a team up? I wish we would do it. For a defence, it just puts pressure on you. Hopefully, we can close them out of it by showing
we can handle it," Pace said. "Hopefully, they'll start huddling back up."
Jets have been preparing to play against a fast-paced Patriots offence that can rip apart the Jets defensive line. This style of play has punished many of the teams in the league.
It was certainly the case when these two teams played against each other last season. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady easily picked apart the Jets weak defence.
Another benefit of using no-huddle is that it does not allow the opposing defence to rotate their players between the plays.
This fast speed has made Patriots capable of getting more number of plays. They are currently standing on top of the league for most plays with 473 plays this season. Talking about Patriots offence, Jets linebacker David Harris said:
"It's very difficult, You'll see defences not even lined up and they're already running a play. They get a lot of extra yardage because of it. It causes guys to lose their mind. You can see it on film."
Harris has a big responsibility to listen to the calls from the sideline and convey it to the rest of the defence. It becomes an even tougher job when you face an up-tempo offence.
With Jets going into this game with a banged up defence, making Brady and company sweat will certainly be a tough nut to crack.
