New York Jets owner Woody Johnson confident in QB Mark Sanchez - NFL News
The New York Jets were one of the franchises said to be after Indianapolis Colts’ free agent quarterback, Peyton Manning, but the Jets left the race after signing current quarterback, Mark Sanchez, to a new five-year deal.
On Tuesday, franchise owner, Woody Johnson, confirmed that the Jets were at one point interested in bringing Peyton Manning to New York City but decided that they already had one of the best quarterbacks in their roster.
In an interview with the Fox Business Network Johnson said that the Jets considered Manning but passed up on him.
“We passed on him. Our fans expect us to look at every opportunity.”
He also added that Sanchez retains his full confidence and they are looking to keep the quarterback at the franchise for the long term.
"We looked at the body of work of Mark Sanchez and wanted to put our faith in him. We have a new offensive coordinator, Tony Sparano, who loves Mark and the team he has around him.”
Manning’s free agent status is a dream for many franchises who are looking to sign one of the best quarterbacks to ever grace the National Football League (NFL).
The Jets have left the race leaving Miami Dolphins, Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos and Tennessee Titans to duke it out for his signature.
Sanchez on the other hand came under regular criticism from fans and even his own teammates who questioned his leadership abilities while also saying that he was mollycoddled at the Jets.
Johnson though believes that good times are around the corner and that Sanchez will realise his true potential under Tony Sparano’s system.
“Mark is a very confident guy, but not confident to a fault. I think he’s going to be an excellent leader. I think we’ll see a so-called growth spurt this year. I think he’ll be very good with Tony’s offense.”
The Jets last season missed out on the playoff rounds for the first time under coach, Rex Ryan’s tenure as internal strife and locker room problems saw the Jets implode during the business end of the season and end up with an 8-8 record.
They will be looking to show a more united front in the new season and make a run for the Super Bowl ring that coach Rex Ryan had promised fans every new season.
