New York Jets owner Woody Johnson says QB Tim Tebow to play with team for three years – NFL News
New York Jets owner Woody Johnson has said that backup quarterback Tim Tebow is likely to remain with the franchise for the next two more seasons. He expressed his views while giving an interview to CNBC on Wednesday, October 10, 2012.
Appreciating Tebow’s talent, Johnson said that he is anticipating some great things from the dynamic quarterback. Johnson said:
"Are we going to keep Tebow? Absolutely, He'll be with us for three years. I think he's going to be a real valuable asset in terms of helping us win games."
Jets head coach Rex Ryan gave his reaction to the owner’s comment saying that Tebow is a very valuable asset for the offence.
However, Ryan did not support the timeline given by Johnson for Tebow’s tenure with the team. Accepting the reality, Ryan said:
"There's no guarantee there that, if there's an opportunity to help your football team & then I guess no player is totally guaranteed that they'll be here. Clearly, he's a guy we thought a lot of, and that's why we traded for him.”
It seems like Johnson is not getting tired with all the fuss around Tebowmania. He previously said during the offseason that he was surprised by the reaction from fans after adding Tebow to the team.
Meanwhile, Tebow appreciated the owner’s remarks, saying that it is always good to get applause from the boss. Tebow said:
"it means a lot to have that support, especially from an owner. You always want support from the top, so it's definitely encouraging."
There seems to be a conflict between the remarks made by the Jets hierarchy and their decision on the field.
They rank Tebow’s talent very high, but his performance in the much anticipated wildcat package has not been very impressive.
On the other hand, Jets are very satisfied in keeping their quarterback Mark Sanchez the starter, despite his lacklustre performance.
If Tebow remains a backup for a longer period, it is likely that quarterback will pack his bag sooner than three years.
