New York Jets owner Woody Johnson says Tim Tebow signed for being "a winner" - NFL News
Tim Tebow’s signing by the New York Jets has led to much criticism by some fan quarters as well as players in the franchise’s roster with most calling it a PR move due to Tebow’s massive fan following across the United States.
However, Jets owner Woody Johnson refuted all such claims and said that he got Tebow because he is a winner and only his talent on the field was considered to make the signing.
Speaking with the press on the sidelines of the National Football League’s (NFL) Annual meetings, Johnson stressed that he makes all decisions based on fans wishes to win and Tebow’s signing was a move to improve their chances of winning more games.
"Let me be really clear about this, we work for the fans and the fans want us to win games,"
Adding further he said that.
“Our mission is to win games pure and simple. We think that Tim Tebow has been a winner all his life."
The move has brought criticism from some players such as cornerback Antonio Cromartie who delivered a twitter rant on the day Tebow signed his new contract. The cornerback though changed his mind in a later interview and came out full of praise for the young
quarterback.
Johnson though has no such doubts and believes that Tebow will bring something special to the Jets offence.
"From a football standpoint, he adds flexibility, versatility, he's a great athlete and he's a big athlete. He can do a lot of things besides being the backup quarterback. I think all of those thing are going to make us a better and stronger team going forward.
I'm excited to have him on board."
The owner also denied that current starter Mark Sanchez will become unhappy with Tebow’s arrival and said that Sanchez will remain the starter for the franchise with Tebow being his backup and they retain their full confidence in Sachez’s abilities.
"The reason we signed him to the extension that we did is that we have so much confidence in Mark."
Tebow was released by the Denver Broncos even after leading them to the playoffs after some mesmerising last quarter displays.
The Broncos lifted the American Football Conference (AFC) West division title and defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in the wild card rounds thanks to Tebow’s heroics.
However, Denver went on to sign free agent Peyton Manning and released Tebow. The quarterback will now look to show his ex-team what they will miss as he brings Tebow-Mania to the Big Apple.
