New York Jets owner Woody Johnson says he signed QB Tim Tebow for wins not selling jerseys - NFL News
Tim Tebow’s trade to the New York Jets took everyone by surprise and most analysts dismissed it as just a marketing move designed to take advantage of the young quarterback’s growing appeal across America.
The Jets traded a fourth and sixth round draft pick to the Denver Broncos to bring in the former Heisman Trophy winner to New York and its huge media market.
Franchise owner, Woody Johnson, though continues to dismiss talks of Tebow’s arrival coming as just a marketing decision and in an interview to
FOX Business Network said that the quarterback has been brought in to win games not to sell jerseys.
"Not really. Jerseys aren't really our main line of business. Our main line of business is winning games. I expect if we do well, we will continue to sell. We're pretty well sold out on PSLs despite what you read about."
Johnson also went on to praise Tebow and said that the quarterback is true to his beliefs and he will be a positive influence in the locker room.
“I am very excited to see what impact he’s going to have. I think he’s a lot like (New Jersey) Governor Christie. He is what he is. He’s true to his beliefs; he’s not afraid to tell you what he believes in. I think he will be a very positive influence in
the locker room and I think he will help us win a lot of games.”
The Jets need all the positive influence they can gain from Tebow’s arrival.
The locker room was as dysfunctional as it can get the previous year and things reached a head after the infinitely documented falling out between wide receiver, Santonio Holmes and quarterback, Mark Sanchez.
New York ended up with a poor 8-8 record and missed out on the playoffs. They also were made to watch a Super Bowl final between two of their greatest rivals the New York Giants and New England Patriots.
This year though the Jets are looking to get back in the playoffs and get their hands on that elusive Super Bowl ring coach, Rex Ryan has been promising since the day he joined.
