New York Jets’ owner Woody Johnson speaks out about his team’s touchdown drought – NFL News
New York Jets owner Woody Johnson has found himself in a terrible situation. He has spent millions of dollars in restructuring the roster during the last few seasons, but has failed to get the desired returns.
Instead, his team has broken a 35-year league record by failing to score a single touchdown during the entire three preseason games.
Johnson was asked about his team’s dilemma related to touchdown during his interview by Fox Business Network on Wednesday, August 29, 2012. Johnson replied:
“We have been remarkably consistent on not scoring touchdowns, that’s for sure. But what I see on offense is we’ve got a lot of guys, just the timing is a little off. But I think we're going to do very, very well when we open up in a couple of weeks.”
Johnson had been pretty silent on the issue until Saturday when he tweeted that Jets were looking to make a touchdown song.
Although it sounds interesting, the notions came out of desperation as Jets have hired a number of reinforcements in this offseason which include players like Tim Tebow.
Coach Rex Ryan and offensive coordinator Tony Sparano have been fairly criticised for the offence’s performance during the first three preseason games.
Ryan has been trying some different things in order to maximise the productivity of the players. Recently, he sent his starters to attend a leadership seminar for increasing unity between the team.
Jets went through 174 plays and 35 drives during the three preseason games, but have only managed to get few field goals.
Sparano recently came out to express his anger towards the team’s failure to reach the end zone. He said:
"We want touchdowns, not field goals. Make sure you put that in the headlines."
Jets coaching staff is feeling the heat after a controversial 2011 season in which the team showed great lack of discipline.
Jets hope that things might change when the season starts as they will have the opportunity to deploy the wild cat package of Tim Tebow, but until then Johnson will have to be patient about his investment.
