New York Jets pick defensive end, Quinton Coples in first round - NFL News
New York Jets picked off defensive end, Quinton Coples with their 16th overall first round draft pick. As the player’s name was announced by commissioner, Roger Goodell the player received applause as well as boos from the Jets fans who came to
the Radio City Hall to watch their team’s new pick.
Unlike some fans though the Jets are happy about their new pick and coach Rex Ryan heaped praise over the new signing after the draft.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Ryan said.
"The old saying is that the defensive tackle's job is to push the quarterback back, and the outside guy's job is to push the quarterback forward. I think with this addition, we can push that quarterback back a little bit."
Fans and analysts had doubts about the North Carolina graduate after his production in his senior year decreased sharply.
In his junior season, Coples was touted as being a number one draft prospect alongside Andrew Luck, however, his decreasing productivity in his final university year pulled him down.
Coples though seems excited at the prospect of joining the Jets and working with Rex Ryan in training camp.
“To get rewarded and be a Jet, it’s unbelievable. (Ryan) told me if I was there at 16, he was going to take me... no matter what.”
“I’m just working hard to be the best athlete as possible in the NFL. I think I’ll be great for the Jets.”
The youngster also said that the franchise have now got great value for their pick with his arrival.
"They got a great value.”
The Jets ended last season with a poor 8-8 record and missed the playoffs after problems in the locker room made their impact on the field.
New York, this year are now looking to get back into the playoffs and hopefully their newest signing will help them achieve that goal.
Coples will join the defensive line unit with his old teammate Muhammad Wilkerson who was the Jets first pick last year.
The young defensive end still has question marks over his temperament and passion for the game but he said all the right things after the draft and hopefully will realise his potential with the Jets.
