New York Jets put defensive back LaRon Landry on PUP list – NFL News
Defensive back LaRon Landry will not attend New York Jets’ training camp as he is put on physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Jets announced the news on Monday, July 23, 2012.
Landry was signed by Jets to replace safety Jim Leonhard. Landry has a long history of Achilles injury.
Jets realise that Landry has history of getting injuries on his heels. This is why they have injury related provisions in his contract.
Earlier, Jets’ head coach Rex Ryan said that he was not much concerned about Landry’s absence. He said:
“These are voluntary-type things. Obviously, I think we’re so used to it over the two previous seasons and even this year we probably had as many guys in our offseason program as anybody, even though it’s voluntary. We probably had as
many guys in our program this year and the first two [years] as anybody in the league. But it is a voluntary-type thing. I’m excited to coach the people that are here and they’ve done a tremendous job so far.”
Landry’s injuries were the main reason behind his underperformance while playing for Washington Redskins. Landry was drafted by Redskins as the sixth overall pick in the 2007 draft.
During his time with Redskins, Landry was asked by doctors to have a surgery, but he refused.
Last season, he played just eight games in which he got 48 tackles with 1.5 sacks and a single forced fumble.
Jets have signed 34-year-old veteran Yeremiah Bell as a backup at safety position. Jets have the option of getting Landry out of the PUP list any time they want.
Yet if he stays injured come the starting game of the season, he will miss the first six game of the season.
Apart from Landry, other three players who are on PUP list are guard Terrence Campbell and two draft picks including wide receiver Jordan White and linebacker Demario Davis.
Landry’s absence is contradictory to what he said in June that he himself was shocked with the rapid recovery of his injuries.
Yet, one might say that Landry’s fitness will affect the overall output of the Jets’ defensive team. Jets’ defensive backs were pretty poor last season.
