New York Jets quarterback Greg McElroy out for Week 17 with a concussion – NFL News
New York Jets quarterback Greg McElroy got a concussion during his first-ever start in the National Football League (NFL) in Week 16 game on Sunday, December 23, 2012, against San Diego Chargers.
However, the player hid it from the team’s medical staff throughout the week, but it was finally revealed on Thursday, December 27, when McElroy started to have severe pain in his head.
Jets medical team have diagnosed that McElroy has a concussion and head coach Rex Ryan made the announced that the quarterback will not be able to play in the season finale.
Even though McElroy has kept the injury secret from the coaching staff, many of the players had the knowledge of the situation including wide receiver Clyde Gates. Giving his views about McElroy’s injury to ESPNNewYork.com, Gates said:
"He came to my room and we talked about it. He was hurting real bad. I was like, 'Bro, I know, I've been down that road already. I'm just saying you can't try to tough it out cause you going to end up hurting yourself. You've got to let everybody know how
you really feel.' . . . It probably was a little pressure.”
Ryan told the media during the press conference that a player should report injury no matter how low on scale it is.
However, the coach admitted that he can understand why McElroy has gone great length to hide the concussion as the quarterback was desperate to get the starting position for the second time in his career. Ryan said:
"I think, hopefully, this will be an example to all the players, because the worst thing that could've happened is he would've gone out there with nobody knowing how he really felt and hurt himself."
In the absence of McElroy, quarterback Mark Sanchez will regain the starting quarterback position. Meanwhile, backup quarterback Tim Tebow has again been left out to get a starting opportunity.
McElroy looked despicable during his first start as the quarterback was sacked a massive 11 times. He finished the game with 14 of 24 for 185 yards and no score.
