New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez’s progress through the years and his prospects – NFL Special
New York Jets starting quarterback Mark Sanchez has been going through turbulent times and there is no doubt that the last few games of the 2012 season could have a detrimental effect on the player’s future.
Anyone following the game would know that Sanchez has failed to keep up his reputation as being the guy who would take the Gang Green to new heights. After taking the team to the playoffs for the first two seasons in the league, it has been all down the
hill for Sanchez.
What is going wrong?
In order to find out what exactly has gone wrong with Sanchez, one must look at how and when things faltered for the quarterback on the rise.
Looking at the record of Sanchez one can easily point out that he has not been able to rectify a few things that has been lingering in his game-play since his rookie season.
One of those things is making mistakes at crucial moment of play. This has been the case many times this season. He fumbled the ball during Week 7 game against New England Patriots that became the turning point.
Similarly, Sanchez kept on throwing interceptions against Arizona Cardinals, which has become a routine in recent times. This led to head coach Rex Ryan finally getting restless and benching him for the rest of the game. A few days after that game, Sanchez
said:
“I’m just disappointed because I let a lot of people down. You let a lot of teammates down when you play like that. It never feels good, it just doesn’t, not the way I prepared, not the skillset I’ve been blessed to have.”
However, some still believe that Sanchez is not to be blamed for all the Jets’ woes as the team has been dealing with injuries to their top players which has led to Sanchez play without his favourite weapons. On giving reasons why he has kept Sanchez as
starter, Ryan once said:
“I think his competitiveness, and he understands you just have to go out and play the position and do it to the best of your ability, believe in your teammates and I think that’s it. Protect the football, that’s all we’re asking him to do. Play the position,
do what you do, but protect the football.”
What lies ahead?
So we all know that Sanchez is sitting where he was in his rookie season. Then the question arises as to what are the long-term prospects of Sanchez with the Gang Green.
Looking at the current scenario, there is no doubt that Jets consider Sanchez as their only available starter. They do not have much confidence in the throwing ability of backup quarterback Tim Tebow. However, a surprising turn has recently been witnessed
as the Jets decided to start with their third-tier quarterback Greg McElroy.
With Sanchez signed up for hefty $8.25 million in guaranteed money for the 2013 season, there is a great chance that he will remain with the team and quite possibly remain the starter as they don’t have much space in the salary cap to entertain four expensive
quarterbacks.
However, Tebow could be released (as some recent reports indicate) and Sanchez might also face some troubles. This all will be decided once the season is over.
There is only one way that Sanchez can get into good books of the management and the fans and that is to rectify his habit of making mistakes. The only question, however, is: Is it already too late to improve?
