New York Jets release wide receivers David Clowney and Patrick Turner to clear room for Santonio Holmes
With wide receiver Santonio Holmes slated to return for the Jets Monday night showdown with the Minnesota Vikings next weekend, the New York Jets have reportedly released wide receivers David Clowney and Patrick Turner.
It is also expected that the Jets will resign defensive tackle Howard Green after Green was released to make room for defensive end Trevor Pryce, whom the Jets claimed off waivers after being released by the Baltimore Ravens.
Turner had yet to see action on the Jets offense this season, and Clowney had managed only one reception for 22 yards when the Jets beat the Dolphins in week 3.
With Jerricho Cotchery and Braylon Edwards seen as the top two receivers (with Holmes out of the lineup), and Brad Smith and tight end Dustin Keller seen as reliable receiving options, Holmes' return makes the receiving pair's inclusion in the lineup unnecessary
for the Jets, whose offence has finally started firing on all cylinders, since its poor performance during week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens.
Holmes is set to return after being suspended for the first four games of the season by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
Holmes came over to the Jets when he was traded by the Pittsburgh Steelers for a fifth-round pick. Holmes was part of the Steelers team which won the Super Bowl in 2008, and he caught the game-winning touchdown pass, winning the award for Super Bowl MVP.
Holmes had his most productive season last year with the Steelers, earning 1000 yards receiving for the first time in his career. He also had 79 receptions and five touchdowns, even though the reigning Super Bowl champions failed to make the playoffs.
Although Holmes played in pre-season and was impressive for the Jets, their game against Minnesota next Monday night will mark Holmes' first regular season game with his new team.
