New York Jets reportedly looking for new GM while retaining current GM Mike Tannenbaum – NFL News
It seems that Mike Tannenbaum is likely counting his days as the general manager of the New York Jets. According to various media reports, Jets are looking for a new man in the position while they are trying to keep Tannenbaum in the administrative
hierarchy.
According to CBS Sports, Jets are silently contacting the candidates for the post of GM. Meanwhile, the team is trying to keep Tannenbaum in the role related to the Jets’ salary cap.
Tannenbaum has been known to have a close relationship with Jets owner Woody Johnson and this seems to be the reason behind the team keeping Tannenbaum in monetary related issues.
However, Tannenbaum’s biggest downfall has been his signing of players that have not been fruitful while costing the team large sum of money, creating a salary cap issue.
The team spokesperson declined to give his views in the matter, and it is expected that any official version would not be available until after the end of the 2012 season.
The team keeping Tannenbaum in that position will not worth a great deal. Moreover, it is highly unlikely that a good candidate would like to come in a team that already has the former GM performing some big role in the administration.
Meanwhile, Jets head coach Rex Ryan did not give much response when asked recently in a radio show as to how he would feel working with a new GM. Ryan replied:
"That's a huge what-if right there. Quite honestly, my thing is we have one game left in the regular season. If my focus is anywhere else, I'm not setting this team up for success. Obviously, what happens in the future, after that, it's
debatable."
Ever since Tannenbaum was given the general manager post by the Jets, the Gang Green has posted a 57-54 record.
While most of the wins have come in the first two years of Ryan as the head coach, the team has regressed greatly in last two seasons and has failed to qualify for playoffs. Tannenbaum still has two years left in his contract.
