New York Jets’ running back LaDainian Tomlinson keeps retirement option on the cards – NFL News
New York Jets’ veteran running back, LaDainian Tomlinson, is now considering retirement, though he is not completely sure of taking such a step according to latest reports on January 6, 2012. The decision might not be final as of yet, but the player is keeping
the option on the cards, deciding his move for the future.
Earlier on when the Jets had their season ended after a 19-17 humiliating loss to the Miami Dolphins, Tomlinson said that he would wait and see how the situation developed and then make a decision.
Now, over a week later, he is still contemplating and is not yet sure what the final decision should be.
Talking on radio, the Jets' RB said he wanted to be in a situation where he could make it to the Super Bowl.
This is not something new for the former San Diego Chargers’ player who earlier on had hinted that he would be unwilling to play for the Jets if they failed to reach the playoffs.
It was this same desire to be in the winning team that he had opted for Rex Ryan’s Jets over the Chargers.
Now with the Jets eliminated from the playoff race, it is not just a change of team that Tomlinson is thinking of, but considering the option of leaving the sport in all.
"I am contemplating retirement. That's what I told my coaches and told my agent and everybody. That's exactly what it is. This is the first time in my playing career that I've actually honestly thought about this may be it for me", Tomlinson said.
The strong desire to be in a winning team stems from the fact that Super Bowl is the only great achievement that is missing in his career.
Tomlinson has had a very impressive career that saw him selected for the Pro Bowls five times, along with receiving the NFL MVP award.
Which team he would opt for in case he does not retire is unclear at the moment. He had signed a two-year contract with the Jets which is now over and is about to be a free agent.
Tomlinson was not sure if the Jets would want him back but said that he still could deliver.
The Chargers are one of the teams that Tomlinson could possibly join. He has spent nine seasons with the team, with whom he has 12,490 yards of rushing and scored 138 touchdowns.
Tomlinson said that he would definitely consider the opportunity of playing with them.
In fact he said that he would think about playing with any team but will come up with a final decision after consulting his family and agent.
"Yeah, absolutely would consider it. I would consider all teams. I'm going to listen to it and talk to the family about it. That doesn’t mean I would take that offer, but I would consider it”, Tomlinson said.
Tomlinson has 13,684 yards of rushing to his credit in his career. In the 2011 NFL regular season, he rushed for 280 yards.
