New York Jets rushing game puts them through Indianapolis Colts with a 35-9 win – NFL Recap
New York Jets (3-3) got their running game going as they went past Indianapolis Colts in an outstanding 35-9 victory in Week 6 tie on Sunday, October 14, 2012, at MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The game was marked by career-best performance from Jets running back Shonn Greene, who looked nearly unstoppable.
Colts failed to stop the Jets’ “Ground and Pound” offence. The defence looked porous in absence of many good players in the starting line-up.
Jets offence finished with 252 rushing yards. It was the first time in this season that Jets rushing play looked in dominant form.
Greene carried the ball 32 times for 161 yards and three touchdowns. Talking about his performance, Greene said:
“When you’re down and the running game is not going as well as you want, it’s easy to just give up on it and just be like, ‘whatever’, but we keep working every week at practice. We keep just grinding and grinding and saying it’s going to come along. And
it did today.”
It was expected that Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez would rely more on his running backs after losing his two wide receivers to injuries.
However, Colts (2-3) defence could not make good tackles against Greene and were behind 21 points in the first half.
Cornerback Jerraud Powers blamed absence of linebacker Robert Mathis for the lack of discipline in the defence. Colts also lost defensive end Cory Redding in the first half to a knee injury. According to the Associated Press, Powers said:
"We wanted Sanchez to have to beat us with his arm. If we stopped the run, that was what they were going to have to do. Whoever we play next week, that's what they're going to do. They're going to run the ball until we stop it."
Colts opened the scoring chart with a 20-yard field goal to end the first quarter 3-0.
Jets offence started finding rhythm in the second quarter as they scored two touchdowns in five minutes. First of those touchdowns was scored with a five-yard catch by wide receiver Stephen Hill.
After that came Greene’s 10-yard run to the end zone. Colts then got another field goal. Jets finished the first half 21-6with a five-yard pass from Sanchez to newly signed wide receiver Jason Hill, who scored his first touchdown.
Greene scored another touchdown in the third quarter to take the score to 28-6. In the final quarter, Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri scored another field goal. The game ended with Greene getting his third touchdown as Jets took their score to 35 points.
