New York Jets sign DE Trevor Pryce off waivers
Former Baltimore Ravens defensive end, Trevor Pryce, who was released on Wednesday, has signed with the New York Jets according to a league source.
The news first broke through Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs who posted news of the signing on his twitter page, writing, "kinda sad 2day. my boy trevor pryce signed wit the JETS!!!!! happy for him but would rather he be on my team!!!!!"
The Ravens had been optimistic that they would have been able to hold on to Pryce and Ravens coach John Harbaugh had been vocal about keeping Pryce on the team, and having him ready to compete by week 5 when they take on the Denver Broncos. The Ravens had
been looking to sign Pryce in the upcoming week.
The Ravens ran the risk of losing Pryce by releasing him to clear room on their roster believing the situation was only temporary and they'd be able to pick him up later. They obviously weren't expecting any teams to bite and take a chance on the 35-year-old
veteran.
The move makes sense for the Jets who have suffered a few injuries to their front seven and haven't been as effective on defence as head coach Rex Ryan would have hoped.
Pryce is also a logical inclusion in the lineup due to the fact that he would already be familiar with the Jets defensive system after playing under Rex Ryan during Ryan's time as the Ravens' defensive coordinator.
Although Pryce is nearing the end of his career, he will offer the Jets extra options in different situations.
In his 14 seasons in the NFL with both the Baltimore Ravens and the Denver Broncos, Trevor Pryce has an impressive resume with over 200 tackles and 90 sacks – the third most among active players – including 6.5 sacks last season with the Ravens.
The Jets next game is against their division rivals, the Buffalo Bills, this Sunday.
