New York Jets sign cornerback Darrin Walls, cut wide receiver Jordan White – NFL News
New York Jets made some alterations in their practice squad on Friday, September 28, 2012, as they signed former Atlanta Falcons cornerback Darrin Walls into the practice squad, while waving rookie wide receiver Jordan White.
General manager Mike Tannenbaum made the announcement later on Friday. White was drafted by Jets in the seventh round of this year’s draft and was part of their practice squad.
Jets were on a mission to acquire a backup at cornerback after a seemingly season-ending injury to their star cornerback Darrelle Revis.
Apart from Walls, Jets tried out Aaron Berry, Chris Carr and Dante Hughes. Berry was the most prominent of all to get a chance to work out. He has been in the headlines lately for allegedly pointing a gun at people in a parking lot.
Carr was looking the best candidate to get the job as far as experience was concerned. He is still 29 and has played in 105 league games.
Although the decision to strengthen the cornerback position seems sensible, it does not mean that Walls will get the entry into the 53-man roster easily. Jets head coach Rex Ryan has previously said:
"Is it a major blow when you lose a great player like Darrelle Revis? Of course, absolutely it is, but this is a football team. We're fortunate because we've got the best in the league in Darrelle and we also have a No. 1 corner in Cromartie. I'm confident
in Kyle."
Walls was signed by Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent out from Notre Dame in the 2011 offseason.
He played five games last season and recorded two tackles and one interception. Walls was then waived during the preseason this year. Most of his playing time was in the special teams.
Cornerback Kyle Wilson will replace Revis in the starting line-up in the Jets Week 4 game against San Francisco 49ers.
