New York Jets sign wide receiver Jason Hill to replace injured Santonio Holmes – NFL News
After getting the news that their top wide receiver Santonio Holmes is out of the rest of the season, New York Jets wasted no time in getting his replacement as they signed free agent Stephen Hill on Wednesday, October 03, 2012.
Holmes got injured during Jets’ Week 4 game against San Francisco 49ers. Jets lost that game by 0-34. Holmes is put on injured reserve list and will be out for the remainder of the season.
Jets had the option to acquire services of some of the big names in the free agency as they tried out wide receivers Chad Johnson, Plaxico Burress and Terrell Owens.
However, their decision to sign Hill was explained by Jets head coach Rex Ryan, who simply said that he was much faster and younger of the whole lot.
On Tuesday, October 02, Hill was in the training facility of New Orleans Saints, a team that is also struggling to get going this season, when he heard from his agent that Jets were interested in him. Hill then took the flight and went through physical examination.
Hill was signed by Denver Broncos this offseason, but was released before the start of the regular season. He was not surprised to get the opportunity to play in the National Football League (NFL) again. Hill said:
“Nothing surprises me. Was I expecting it? No. Is it the N.F.L.? Yes.”
Last season, Hill was with Jacksonville Jaguars and called Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis “Overhyped”. He said of this matter:
“It’s in the past. We’re teammates now. We’re going to move forward.”
Jets will not have to look into this matter any time soon as Revis is also on the season-ending injured reserve alongside Holmes.
Apart from Hill, Jets currently have wide receivers Chaz Schilens, Stephen Hill and Jeremy Kerley on the roster. Stephen Hill is still not fit enough to play.
Jets have a number of the offensive players injured including tight end Dustin Keller who will likely remain unavailable for Week 5 game against Houston Texans on Sunday, October 07.
Hill has played six seasons in the league, four with San Francisco 49ers and two with Jaguars. In his career, he has caught a total of 76 passes for 1,028 yards.
