New York Jets training camp Day 1: quarterback Mark Sanchez outperforms Tim Tebow – NFL News
New York Jets’ offence looked outstanding as the first practice session ended on Friday, July 27, 2012.
Yet the most prominent thing that came out from the training session was the superb performance from quarterback Mark Sanchez.
The overall offence looked very sharp as compared to the sloppy defensive team.
Sanchez got most of the snapping time, with Tim Tebow getting a smaller portion. Sanchez was very happy with his output and said:
"Exactly what we wanted. The pace, the tempo, the excitement. That was perfect. Exactly what coach (Tony) Sparano was preaching to us last night.”
A day before the start of training camp, Sanchez said that he was looking to be in attacking mode going into training camp. He proved exactly what he had said. He looked very comfortable with the scheme of new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano.
“To be honest, we expect to be crisp. There’s no other choice with Coach Sparano. If not, you’re going to hear about it. It was everything we wanted this first day.”
On the other hand, Tebow had an average day on the field. He was able to take a total of 12 snaps, which included one penalty. He played only with the second team.
Jets practised in a traditional offensive system, although they do look to play on a more flexible system that can utilise the versatility of players like Tebow.
Talking about Tebow, Head coach Rex Ryan said:
“I like the way he’s looking down the field. He’s made some nice throws and then there’s times (when) he underthrew Hill. . . . Overall, I’m impressed with the way he throws the ball down the field.”
Tebow also spent some time playing for the special team as he played as a personal protector in the punt team.
Jets see a change in offensive system after spending six years with former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.
Meanwhile, Rex Ryan will have to put more emphasis on making his defensive team better, which lacked the sharpness during training.
