New York Jets use bye week to scout themselves
The New York Jets coaching staff recently drew up a game plan to take on a formidable opponent – themselves.
"Good game plan," head coach Rex Ryan said jokingly on Monday, 25 October. "It seems like the Jets pressure a bunch on defense, and it seems like this team is very effective running the football. They have some playmakers over there."
Everyone in the Jets coaching staff was investigating ways to improve their team and took the time to study film and imagine how other teams would plan to play against them.
"It's a good thing. Sometimes you can't see the forest through the trees and this just shows you how an opponent would look at you. Opponents break film down differently, but you still get the meat and potatoes of what every opponent sees."
The Jets are currently 5-1 and tied with the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers atop the AFC standings, but they still claim that they haven't played their best football.
"We haven't played our best football and we have the opportunity to do that," linebacker
Bart Scott said. "We have 10 games to kind of move ourselves up the rankings, but more importantly, we're 5-1."
The Jets get back into action this week when they take on the Green Bay Packers at home.
After losing their opening game of the season 10-9 to the Baltimore Ravens, the Jets have won five in a row, improving with every game.
They've also benefited from the return of several players who were unavailable at the start of the season, including receiver Santonio Holmes (who was out due to a league suspension), Calvin Pace (who's returned from a foot injury), and Darrelle Revis (who
has stated that his hamstring is back to 100 percent).
The week off has not only helped the team better prepare for their next game, but has also refreshed their systems physically and mentally.
"Once you get on that kind of roll, you want to just keep going," Ryan said. "But for this football team, we're better now because of the break. We're fresher. We have no excuses. Let's just go out and play."
