New York Jets want to curtail Tim Tebow's off the field commitments - NFL News
The New York Jets brought in one of the most talked about quarterbacks into their roster after completing a trade with the Denver Broncos in March.
However, Tebow’s new team is looking to curtail his off the field commitments as they try to keep controversy at arm’s length.
That would be difficult given Tebow’s huge appeal amongst football fans across the United States but the Jets are already looking to keep their backup quarterback from talking too much to the media.
According to league sources, the New York Times reported that the Jets will try to keep Tebow off radio for the 2012-13 season.
"That could change," a source said. "If Tim becomes the starter, the radio thing could happen."
The young quarterback did a radio interview for ESPN last Friday, but that will not become a regular occurrence as the Jets will look to keep Tebow off the public radar.
Tebow’s arrival began rumours of an impending quarterback controversy with Mark Sanchez even after repeated statements by both head coach Rex Ryan and general manager Mike Tannenbaum to the contrary.
It would take one wrong statement from Tebow on any media to lead to another locker room controversy and that is what the Jets are looking to avoid.
The quarterback arrived in New York after the franchise completed a trade with Denver Broncos by giving up a fourth and sixth round draft pick.
The Jets are likely to use Tebow in a wildcat offence to supplement the skills of Mark Sanchez and hope that both quarterbacks can work together to get the Jets back in the playoff picture.
New York Jets ended the 2011-12 regular season with an 8-8 record. This was the first time under coach Rex Ryan that the Jets failed to reach the playoff rounds.
The franchise’s season imploded after locker room battles between Sanchez and wide receiver Santonio Holmes blew out of proportion as players started taking sides.
The circus surrounding the Jets increased further with statements from anonymous players criticising Sanchez’s leadership skills and abilities.
This year though the Jets are hoping to put behind all such problems and return back into the playoffs.
