New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes gets foot injury – NFL News
New York Jets got another blow to their plans for the season as their star wide receiver Santonio Holmes injured his foot during the staggering 34-0 loss to San Francisco 49ers during Week 4 game on Sunday, September 30, 2012.
Holmes caught a four-yard pass from quarterback Mark Sanchez at the start of final quarter of the game. He then tried to follow up with a run when he planted his leg on the field and fell to the ground.
The wide receiver was unable to hold the ball, leading to a fumble which was recovered by 49ers cornerback Carlos Rodgers for a touchdown.
Holmes was unable to put any kind of weight on his injured foot and was carted off to the sidelines.
According to media reports, Holmes had an X-ray which came out negative. He is reported to have MRI scan on Monday.
Jets head coach Rex Ryan gave no specific details about the severity of the injury. Sanchez did speak about the fumble that led to the 49ers’ touchdown when his receiver was injured. Sanchez said:
"That's really too bad. You'd love him to hang on to the ball, but at the same time the guy's going down and hurt himself and kind of assumed the play was over so, another tough play. There's some great ability in that receiver room, so they'll have to pick
up the slack."
The injury to Holmes could not have come at a worse time for Jets who are facing a real shortage of quality players at various positions due to injuries.
Jets’ injury list includes Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis, tight end Dustin Keller, rookie wide receiver Stephen Hill and tight end Dedrick Epps who also got injured during the game.
Wide receiver Chaz Schilens expressed his views about the injury to Holmes and how it will affect the overall output of the Jets offence. Schilens said:
"It's not good. Santonio catches a lot of balls; the offense runs through him, so part of football is to pick it up and other guys have to make plays, including myself. So it is what it is."
Jets were completely dismantled during the game on Sunday and their next assignment is against Houston Texans, who are unbeaten this season.
