New York Jets’ wide receiver Santonio Holmes likely to miss the preseason opener – NFL News
New York Jets are going through a tough time as far as their receiving corps is concerned. Many of their wide receivers are injured.
Santonio Holmes was unable to practise on Monday, and will most likely miss the Jets first preseason game against Cincinnati Bengals.
Previously, there were concerns that Holmes probably had a broken rib, but it was later determined through X-rays that Holmes ribs were only bruised.
Head Coach Rex Ryan talked about the situation before the start of practice session. He said:
"We're lucky he never had a fractured rib like I thought, so that's a good sign. But I'd say he's doubtful. As soon as he's back, we have to get as many reps as possible to make up for lost time."
Holmes got a strong hit from Cromartie on Saturday during practice drills. Jets other options in the absence of Holmes are very limited, particularly because of the injury to slot receiver Jeremy Kerley who has a pulled his hamstring.
Kerley also had some problems in learning the new system put in place by new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano.
Under the absence of their two starters, Jets will work with Chaz Schilens as well as rookies Patrick Turner and Stephen Hill.
Hill was impressive during Monday’s practice sessions and starting quarterback Mark Sanchez praised his work. Sanchez said:
"He's doing a great job stretching the field. He's fast, he's a long guy. He can really stride ... It's nice to see that happen to Stephen, but we've got to work on the intermediate and underneath stuff as well. He has to be sharp on that as well."
Coach Ryan did not give any indication that he is planning to add another veteran to back up Holmes.
Jets did not sign Plaxico Burress this season. He was in the top three wide receivers for Jets last season.
There is a chance for Jets to sign Burress, as he is still unsigned. There is also a chance that defensive back Cromartie might also have some role in the receiving corps.
