New York Jets’ wide receiver Santonio Holmes rib injury not as severe as thought before – NFL News
The injured ribs of the New York Jets’ wide receiver Santonio Holmes are just bruised not broken, the player’s x-ray reports have confirmed.
Holmes’ injury status will be reviewed on day-to-day basis.
Holmes got a hard hit on Saturday, August 04, 2012 from Antonio Cromartie, who claims to be the second-best wide receiver in the team behind Holmes.
Jets’ head coach Rex Ryan earlier assumed that Holmes probably had a broken rib. Jets will face a difficult situation of playing an average wide receiver in Holmes' absence. According to the Associated Press, Ryan said of the player:
"He's a tough guy, but I don't think he's going to be running out there tomorrow or the next day. But we'll see."
There is not much depth and quality in the wide receiving corps apart from Holmes. If he remains injured, Cromartie might get a chance of playing at the receiving post. Ryan is hoping that Holmes will be fit as quickly as possible. Ryan said:
"I'm sure he'll be fine, but we'll have to check on him later. Other than that, he had a good day."
Jets have many receivers on the injury list. Jeremy Kerley has been in only one practice of the entire training camp while Chaz Schilens is out with a hamstring injury and various other receivers are currently injured.
Holmes did not practise on Sunday as he had a lot of soreness in his body, according to Ryan.
Ryan went on to emphasise on the importance of having Holmes in the team. He said:
"You'd love to have your No. 1 guy out there, your big gun out there, and he looked good today. Him and (Mark) Sanchez connected several times. It's not ideal, but you just have to play the hand that's dealt to you."
Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Holmes in the first round (25th overall pick) in the 2006 draft. He received the MVP title in the 2009 season.
Last season, Holmes played all 16 games. He managed to get 51 receptions and covered 654 yards while getting eight touchdowns.
Holmes previously missed some part of the offseason minicamp back in June this year.
