New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes unavailable for Week 5 game – NFL News
New York Jets will enter the field without their star wide receiver Santonio Holmes in their Week 5 game against Houston Texans on Sunday, October 07, 2012 according to head Coach Rex Ryan.
Ryan announced the news on Monday October 01, and also confirmed that X-rays of Holmes’ injured foot have come out negative.
Holmes injured his foot at the start of final quarter of the Jets’ Week 4 game against San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, September 30, which they terribly lost, 34-0.
Ryan said that the team is yet to diagnose what has happened to Holmes. His foot later went through MRI on Monday. Jets have consulted various specialists to discuss the MRI report.
The head coach told the media that he currently does not have any timetable for the return of his wide receiver. Ryan said:
"I'm not sure how many weeks he'll be out, the real extent of the injury. We just know the X-rays were negative. That's good news. Obviously, it looks doubtful for this week."
Holmes looked in terrible pain after he planted his foot on the ground during the game. Depending on how serious the injury is, Holmes could miss multiple games.
During the play in which Holmes got injured, he received a four-yard pass and was trying to go further when he injured his foot.
The wide receiver then lost the ball which was returned by 49ers cornerback Carlos Rogers for a touchdown.
Holmes has received a total of 20 passes and covered 272 yards this season. His injury puts Jets under serious concerns about their offence which was unable to score a single point against 49ers.
Wide receiver Kyle Wilson will replace Holmes as the starter in the offensive line-up. Ryan has shown confidence in his backup wide receiving corps, but it will be difficult for Wilson to fill Holmes’ boots. Ryan went on and said:
"If we're healthy, I feel good about that group,"
Ryan has denied the speculations that he is looking for a veteran free agent wide receiver to replace Holmes.
