New York Knicks Carmelo Anthony suffers minor injury in training - NBA Update
New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony suffered a minor injury setback on Monday. The super star hyper extended a knee during practice and had to sit out the rest of the session. He walked off by himself though and the injury is not believed to be serious.
"I tried to make a move, I tried to plant. My foot slipped," Anthony said. "I kind of hyper extended my leg a little, my knee a little bit. But I'm fine."
Anthony, who joined the Knicks just before the trade deadline midway through the last season, has had surgery on his elbow and knee in the offseason. He has since made a full recovery and earlier told reporters that he feels "better this season than I've felt in a long long time."
The injury on Monday was not on the knee he had surgery on, during the summer.
"I'm good, no worries," he said.
The Knicks believe Carmelo Anthony will be back in action as soon as Tuesday, or by Wednesday and have decided to treat the case on a day to day basis. New York head coach Mike D’Antoni also downplayed the injury. He was confident that Anthony would be fine in a day or two.
"He's playing tomorrow. If not, it's the next day," D'Antoni said. "I think he just went out just to ice it down and be ready to go tomorrow."
The coach, who even joked that Anthony was just making a big deal out of it to skip out of practice, said the injury was not anything to worry about. Mike was happy with how Anthony had been performing in the training camp and said the rest given to the player was just precautionary.
"He's been going great... why risk it?" the coach said, turning serious. "There's really no risk but why not wait until tomorrow."
Knicks fans would be hoping the injury doesn’t mar what promises to be a great season for the New York faithful. The team has been playing very well ever since Anthony made his move to the Big Apple from the Denver Nuggets.
The Knicks looked on course to give the Boston Celtics a run for their money in the playoffs last season before injury to super star power forward Amar’e Stoudemire severely crippled their offence. Stoudemire has undergone a long recuperating process since then and New York have been extra careful with the health of their star players since.
The Knicks have bolstered their frontline further with the acquisition of free agent centre Tyson Chandler. Chandler played for the Dallas Mavericks last season and helped them win the NBA World Championship. New York are hoping, injuries permitting, the big man can help them bring home some silverware as well.
